Whygo2 Venice
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a holiday to Venice.
Unique
Venice is truly the most romantic city in the world. This unique and beautiful city is built on stilts and boasts a maze of islands, canals and over 400 bridges. The city is divided into six quarters (sesteri). Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Marco, San Polo and Santa Croce, all of which offer easy access to many of Venices main attractions. The absence of motor vehicles adds to the charm of this unique city, getting around by vaporettas and water taxis is the only way to discover the 118 islets that form the Venice lagoon. A trip to Venice is not complete without a trip on the much loved Italian gondolas, what could be more romantic than a moonlit trip along a Venice Canal, the atmosphere and reflections of the canal are quite unforgettable.
Architecture
The landmarks of Venice are a mixture of Renaissance, Gothic and Byzantine styles with the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale offering the best examples of architecture dating back to its creation in the 5th Century.
Shopping
Venice is better known for its production of fine glass and lace; visit the island of Murano where you can see how the glassblowers make wonderful chandeliers, wine glasses and much more, the island of Burano is where you can you purchase fine lace and pick up many a good bargain. Window-shopping in the boutiques of St Marks Square and the Rialto Bridge is highly recommended and locally made mementos and gifts can be found in the Mercerie and nearby Calle dei Fabbri, which have been the main shopping streets in Venice for hundreds of years.
Carnival
The Venice Carnival revives the traditional masked balls and elaborate costumes of the 18th century and is the highlight of the citys year. With a 2 week series of processions, masquerades, traditional ceremonies, music and all-round festivities among the canals, squares and palaces of this ancient city, the Venice Carnival is one of the most celebrated and fascinating events in Europe. It has existed in some form or another since the 13th century and each year the carnival displays a different theme.
Food and Drink
Restaurants in Venice offer a wide variety of food; ranging from international fast food to five star Italian cuisine. Sophisticated and expensive restaurants including Harrys Bar can be found in the area around St Marks Square, however if you are looking for good value and regional specialities you may be better heading for smaller, back-street trattorias, pizzerias and osteries.
